RADAR NAVIGATION, RADAR PLOTTING AND USE OF ARPA

The course provides training in the basic theory and use of radar for officers in charge of a navigational watch, mandatory for seafarers wishing to obtain the certificate of navigational officer or third-class navigational officer.

The course also covers the recognition of critical targets, capacity tracking limitations, the measurement of bearings and distances, errors in interpretation, errors in data display, test operating systems to determine data accuracy, risks of overestimation of A.R.P.A. and the use of these for fixing the ship's position and maintaining a plot of the movement of other ships as an aid to collision avoidance.
